The Mistral hotel, in Maleme, offers a safe, friendly environment to people who happen to travel alone but want to be with others who also travel alone. The rich breakfast buffet focuses on Cretan products and traditional recipes. There is fresh bread and bakery products. There are also cakes and dried fruits, fresh yoghurt, “pasteli” (sesame and honey bar), tahini and fruits. Guests may also try homemade jams and a variety of cookies and biscuits. Greek feta and Cretan cheeses such as gruyere, “myzithra” cheese and cold cuts are basic staples at the breakfast table, as well as the pies from Sfakia with Cretan thyme honey. The Cretan “dakos” with olive oil, fresh grated tomato and “galomyzithra” cheese from Chania is also recommended. Specialties include the “lychnarakia” (with cheese), “strapatsada” (scrambled eggs with tomato) or omelet with “apaki” (smoked pork). Another special dish is “loukoumades” (dumplings with honey). As for beverages, guests may choose among various teas and Cretan “malotira” (mountain tea), as well as fresh coffee, orange juice and grape fruit juice.
