Guests may start their Greek breakfast with a cup of Greek coffee or herbal beverage, such as sage, “diktamo”, “malotyra”, chamomile or tisane. There is a selection of fresh breads and rusks, cookies and biscuits. Extra virgin olive oil and olives, thyme honey, jams, dried fruits and nuts are among the basic Cretan staples. Dairies include fresh sheep’s yoghurt, plain or with honey and walnuts, and a wide range of Cretan cheeses such as gruyere, “kefalotyri”, feta, “anthotyros”, “myzithra”, “ksigalo” and “ksynomyzithra”. The cold cuts selection features the Cretan smoked “apaki” pork and village style sausages. Fresh fruits and fruit salads are also available to guests. Hot specialties include “kalitsounia” with “myzithra” cheese and honey, cream-filled “bougatsa”, cheese pie, pie with “myzithra”, “sfouggato” omelet with tomato and zucchinis, and fried eggs with “apaki”. For dessert, there is “kserotigana”, (fritters) tahini halva, “lychnarakia”, various spoon sweets and “loukoumades” (honey dumplings).
